In this tutorial you'll learn about SIM states and how to move your M2M devices from one state to another in the Aeris connectivity service.
SIM states
The services accessible to a device depend on the state of its SIM. If the device's SIM is inactive, the device will not be able to connect to the Aeris network and use data or SMS services. But if the SIM is in one of the active states, it can use the Aeris network to send or receive data or SMS.
A SIM can be in one of five states. Assigned and Canceled are the two inactive states. Provisioned, Active-billed and Suspended are the active states.
SIM states with descriptions

Assign |
The state in which you receive your SIM cards. A SIM is unknown to the Aeris network. As such, it is not enabled to transmit or receive data or SMS on the network. |
Provisioned |
The SIM is registered (or provisioned) on the Aeris network and can transmit or be reached through the Aeris network services (SMS and data). However, its usage is not billed (see the state transition table). |
Active-billed |
The SIM can transmit or be reached through the Aeris network services. A monthly access fee to the Aeris network is charged. Usage is billed or deducted from the included amount of data. |
Suspended |
The SIM is still registered on the Aeris network, but is considered to be "at rest". When the SIM is moved to the suspended state, a one-time suspension fee applies, but no subsequent monthly access fee is charged. The SIM is still able to pass traffic, i.e. transmit or receive data or SMS (see the state transition table). |
Canceled |
The SIM is no longer registered on the Aeris network and cannot transmit or be reached through the Aeris network services. |
State transitions
A transition between two states can occur when a manual or automatic trigger is hit.
Manual triggers
You can move one or many of your SIM cards to different states manually in AerPort™, Aeris's web-based user interface, or by programming an application to do so using the Aeris AerAdmin API.
Automatic triggers
A SIM can also move to different states when a predefined event occurs (e.g. usage threshold).
This table details the triggers for each state. Some transitions are not currently supported and are marked N/A in the table:

Manually manage your SIM states in AerPort
You can move one or many of your SIMs to different states using AerPort, our web-based user interface.
Before we show you how to do this, please note that changing the state of your device might effect your monthly or one-time charges.
Step 1:
Navigate to the Devices tab in AerPort. To change your SIM's state, browse through the list of ICCIDs to find the one belonging to your SIM. Click the edit icon at the end of the line.
Step 2:
Click the Device Status drop-down menu in the edit window, select the new State and click Apply.
In the following example, the SIM is Provisioned. When you select Start Billing, the SIM will change to the Active-billed state.
Manage states with AerAdmin API
You can also modify the states of your SIMs using the Aeris AerAdmin API. Please refer to the AerAdmin API documentation for details.
Billing and device availability
Every time you modify the state of one of your SIMs, both the applicable charges and availability of the device might be changed.
