Technology Sunset - Introduction

Wireless cellular carriers (mobile operators) world-wide are expected to turn off, or “sunset”, their older Second Generation (2G) and Third Generation (3G) CDMA and GSM cellular services as they “re-farm” the old networks’ wireless spectrum and continue to expand their 4G LTE and 5G networks to manage larger quantities of devices and applications with more efficient wireless technologies. Because LTE-ready devices for use in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications are harder to find than they are for the consumer market, the sunset of 2G and 3G services will have a disproportionate impact on M2M and IoT.

To help our customers understand when carriers are making this change, we are providing estimates on when these older cellular technologies will be taken out of service, and provide what assistance we can to help customers prepare for these transitions.
